Black-crowned night heron

Systematic position. The black-crowned night heron (Nyctocorax nycticorax) belongs to the family Ardeidae, within the order Pelecaniformes. In agricultural and aquaculture contexts, it is considered a pest species, particularly for commercial fish farming operations located in wetland areas or proximity to nesting colonies.

Biology and life cycle. These birds are primarily nocturnal, which makes them highly effective predators in fish ponds during the hours when fish are less active. They typically nest in colonies near water sources and are known for their migratory patterns. Their reproductive cycle includes building nests in reeds or trees, with incubation periods lasting approximately three weeks, followed by intensive feeding of chicks with aquatic organisms.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The primary impact is the predation on juvenile fish, such as carp and trout, in hatchery ponds and nursery systems. A single colony can consume large quantities of high-value stock, leading to significant economic losses. Furthermore, these herons serve as biological vectors, spreading parasites like trematodes and various pathogenic bacteria between different ponds, which can compromise the health status of the entire aquaculture facility.

Protection measures. Managing the presence of black-crowned night herons in aquaculture requires a combination of exclusion and deterrent strategies:

• Installation of overhead anti-bird netting to physically prevent access to water surfaces.
• Deployment of bioacoustic bird dispersal systems that emit distress calls.
• Use of automated laser deterrents to interrupt nocturnal hunting activity.
• Modification of pond topography, specifically steepening banks to restrict shallow-water wading access.

Management and agronomic significance. Effective control requires minimizing the attractiveness of the site to the herons. By integrating structural barriers with repellent technology, fish farmers can drastically reduce predation rates. While these birds are often protected species, proactive site management through habitat modification and non-lethal deterrents remains the standard professional approach for protecting aquaculture assets from avian predators.
