Obama nungara is a species of land planarian, a predatory flatworm belonging to the family Geoplanidae. Originating from South America, this invasive species has successfully colonized various regions across Europe, adapting quickly to new environments and becoming a significant threat to local soil ecosystems.

The biology of the flatworm is adapted for survival in moist conditions. Measuring up to 7 cm in length, they possess a soft, flattened body with distinct coloration patterns. They are hermaphrodites that reproduce via cocoons, which can survive in varied environmental conditions, making them particularly difficult to eradicate once they become established in a garden or nursery.

The primary damage caused by Obama nungara is the depletion of soil biodiversity. As specialized predators, they actively hunt and consume earthworms, which are essential for soil aeration, decomposition, and nutrient cycling. A significant reduction in earthworm populations leads to compacted, nutrient-poor soil, indirectly negatively impacting plant health and yield.

In greenhouses and nurseries, the presence of these flatworms is particularly concerning. While they do not directly feed on plant tissues, the destruction of the natural soil biota leads to poor growing conditions for seedlings and ornamental plants. Their ability to move unnoticed in potting mix facilitates their spread across commercial nurseries, posing a risk to the trade of ornamental plants.

Effective control measures require a vigilant and multi-pronged strategy. Since there are no widely approved pesticides targeting this species specifically, management relies on:
