The American pika (Ochotona princeps) is a small mammal belonging to the order Lagomorpha and the family Ochotonidae. While it is often associated with alpine ecosystems, it can act as a significant agricultural pest when colonies encroach upon farmland or forage on cultivated vegetation near their rocky habitats.
Pikas damage a wide range of crops, primarily targeting grasses, forbs, legumes, and young woody shoots. Because they reside in rocky outcrops, they can move into nearby cultivated fields, significantly reducing yields in high-altitude agricultural areas by consuming or harvesting available green biomass.
The biology of the pika is unique due to its caching behavior. During the summer and autumn, pikas actively gather vegetation, spreading it out on flat rocks to dry in the sun. This created "haypiles" serve as their food source throughout the winter. They do not hibernate, so their survival depends on the sheer volume of harvested material, which directly translates to crop loss for farmers.
The pest impact of the American pika is characterized by the rapid depletion of localized plant populations. A high density of pikas in a specific area can lead to overgrazing and total loss of harvest in affected patches of fields. The evidence of their presence includes visible clipping of stems near the ground and the accumulation of dried plant stacks in rocky crevices.
Effective management and protection strategies include the following:
- Managing field edges by removing debris and rock piles that provide shelter for pika colonies.
- Employing fencing or physical barriers to prevent movement from natural habitats into cultivated fields.
- Using approved rodenticides during the peak harvesting season if population levels exceed economic thresholds.
