Description
Systematic position. Ochrosis belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Chrysomelidae, and subfamily Alticinae. These small jumping beetles are specialized pests that primarily target plants within the Brassicaceae family, making them significant threats in agricultural landscapes.
Host plants. The primary targets for this pest are members of the mustard family. Significant damage is often observed in oilseed rape, mustard, various cabbage cultivars, radish, and daikon. During periods of peak population density, these beetles can destroy young seedlings, often leading to total crop failure during the cotyledon stage.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Ochrosis includes the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults typically overwinter in the upper soil layers, under plant debris, or in field margins. As temperatures rise in the spring, beetles emerge to feed and begin oviposition, placing eggs in the soil or on the underside of host plant leaves.
Damage and pest impact. Adults cause damage by creating small, characteristic "shot-hole" perforations in the foliage. Heavy infestation results in the leaves taking on a lace-like appearance, eventually causing them to wilt and die. The larvae may also mine the leaf tissue or feed on the roots, further weakening the plant and increasing susceptibility to secondary pathogens.
Protection measures. Integrated pest management strategies include:
- Crop rotation protocols excluding Brassicaceae for 3-4 years.
- Effective management of cruciferous weeds that serve as pest reservoirs.
- Early sowing dates to ensure plants pass the vulnerable stage before peak beetle activity.
- Utilization of insecticidal seed treatments.
- Application of contact or systemic insecticides upon reaching established economic injury thresholds.
