Description
Systematic position: The flax flea beetle (Ochrosis ventralis) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is a significant agricultural pest that specifically targets flax crops, often leading to substantial yield losses if not properly managed during the early stages of plant growth.
Crops and damage: The primary host is flax (Linum usitatissimum). Adults feed on the cotyledons and true leaves of emerging seedlings, creating characteristic shot-hole patterns. Severe feeding can destroy the growing point, leading to seedling death, while larval stages may feed on the root system, causing further stress to the plant.
Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles overwinter in sheltered areas, such as leaf litter, field margins, or under soil crusts. In early spring, as temperatures rise, they emerge and migrate to flax fields. After mating, females lay eggs in the soil near the base of the plants, where larvae develop and complete their lifecycle before emerging as a new generation in summer.
