Ocnerogyia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Erebidae (subfamily Lymantriinae). These insects are recognized as significant pests in fruit-growing regions, where their larvae feed on the foliage of various woody plants. Due to their biology and feeding habits, they can cause substantial damage to orchard trees if left unmonitored during the growing season.

The primary hosts for this pest include various species of the Rosaceae family. Apricot, apple, plum, and peach trees are particularly susceptible to infestations. In regions where these host plants are grown commercially, Ocnerogyia larvae pose a risk of causing localized outbreaks that lead to severe defoliation of the canopy, impacting the overall vitality of the trees.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs in clusters, often covering them with specialized hairs from their abdomen to provide protection against environmental factors and predators. Larval development occurs through several instars, during which the caterpillars become increasingly voracious, consuming plant tissue at a rapid rate.

The damage is primarily characterized by skeletonization and total defoliation of leaves. When the larvae are in their early stages, they feed on leaf tissues, but later instars consume entire leaves, leaving only the midribs. This massive loss of foliage significantly reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the trees, which leads to stunted growth, reduced fruit size, and weakened tree health, making them more vulnerable to secondary infections.
