Octotoma

Octotoma is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Chrysomelidae, specifically the subfamily Cassidinae. These insects are widely recognized in agricultural entomology for their role as specialized herbivores that feed on the foliage of specific plant species, primarily acting as leaf miners during their larval stages.

The host range of Octotoma species is often limited, with Octotoma scabripennis being a prominent example known for feeding on Lantana plants. While this feeding habit is sometimes utilized for weed biocontrol, it can become problematic when these beetles interact with non-target crops, causing economic damage.

The life cycle begins with eggs deposited into the plant tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately start feeding internally, creating distinct tunnels known as mines within the leaf blades.
