Description
Systematic position: Octotoma scabripennis belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae (leaf beetles), specifically the subfamily Hispinae. This insect is recognized in agronomy and ecology as a specialized herbivore, widely studied for its role in the biological control of persistent invasive weeds in various global environments.
Host plants: The primary target for this beetle is Lantana camara, a notorious invasive plant that degrades agricultural lands and natural habitats. The insect has evolved to feed specifically on this plant, making it an excellent candidate for host-specific weed management programs in tropical and subtropical regions.
Biology and life cycle: The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adults feed on the surface of the leaves, creating irregular holes. Females oviposit within the leaf tissues, and the emerging larvae are leaf-miners. These larvae tunnel through the internal leaf structure (the parenchyma), consuming the plant from within and completing their growth cycle protected inside the leaf.
