Chimney Sweeper moth

The Chimney Sweeper moth (Odezia atrata) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. Unlike most Geometrid moths that are nocturnal, this species is diurnal, making it frequently observable during the day in grassy habitats where it actively flies among vegetation.

This insect is primarily associated with meadows, forest edges, and damp grasslands. Its larvae (caterpillars) specialize in feeding on plants within the Apiaceae family, with Anthriscus sylvestris (cow parsley) serving as the main host plant. In some cases, the larvae may inhabit areas where other wild umbellifers are present.

The biological cycle of this moth is characterized by complete metamorphosis. The adults emerge in early summer, and after mating, females deposit eggs on the host plants. The larvae pass through several instars, feeding on foliage, before moving to the soil or leaf litter to pupate. The species typically overwinters in the pupal stage, awaiting warmer temperatures to resume activity.

Damage caused by this pest involves the consumption of leaf tissue, which can reduce the vigor of host plants. In commercial grasslands or hay meadows, significant populations of Odezia atrata can lead to yield losses. While they are not typically considered a major pest of primary staple crops, their presence on pasture land can impact forage availability.
