Odites issikii
Description
Systematic position. Odites issikii (Takahashi, 1930) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Depressariidae. This moth is recognized as a regional pest in East Asia, where its presence can significantly impact the health of susceptible woody plants in both natural and agricultural ecosystems.
Host plants. The moth primarily targets species within the Rosaceae family. Fruit-bearing trees, particularly apple (Malus) and pear (Pyrus), are the most common hosts. It may also utilize hawthorn and other related shrubs as secondary hosts, which allows the population to persist in areas surrounding commercial orchards.
Biology and life cycle. The species typically overwinters as late-instar larvae within silken cocoons located in bark crevices. Upon the arrival of spring, larvae emerge to feed on developing buds and young foliage. The life cycle involves several larval instars, and in warmer regions, the insect may complete its development rapidly, potentially leading to overlapping generations throughout the growing season.
Damage and economic impact. Larval feeding behavior is the main cause of economic damage. Young larvae skeletonize the leaf tissue, while older larvae create shelter by rolling leaves and binding them with silk threads. Heavy infestations lead to extensive defoliation, which severely stresses the trees, reduces fruit quality, and hampers the overall yield for the current and subsequent seasons.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Odites issikii. Cultural practices, such as removing loose bark and pruning damaged foliage, help reduce overwintering sites. Chemical control involves the application of selective insecticides applied during the early larval stage. Regular monitoring using pheromone traps is highly recommended to time the insecticide applications effectively and minimize environmental impact.
