Locust leafminer

The locust leafminer (Odontota dorsalis) is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is widely recognized as a major pest of the black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), frequently causing aesthetic and physiological damage to forest and ornamental plantings.

While the black locust is its primary host, this insect is known to feed on a variety of other hardwoods, including birch, cherry, apple, and oak. Both adults and larvae contribute to the damage, though their feeding habits differ significantly, resulting in distinct visual symptoms on the host plants.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, beginning when adults emerge from hibernation in the spring to feed on foliage and lay eggs. Eggs are laid in clusters on the underside of leaves. Upon hatching, larvae bore into the leaf tissue, creating mines. These larvae feed on the mesophyll, which protects them from many environmental factors and predators.

Visible symptoms of infestation include the skeletonization of leaves by adults and the formation of brown, papery patches (mines) caused by larval feeding. When populations reach outbreak levels, entire stands of trees may appear scorched or brown by mid-summer, which reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the trees and weakens their long-term health.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key measures include:

• Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
• Removing and destroying infested leaf litter to reduce over-wintering populations.
• Applying systemic insecticides during the peak beetle emergence period.
• Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids in the ecosystem.

Regular monitoring is crucial for successful management. Early detection of leaf miners allows for timely intervention before the larval populations become established within the leaf tissue, where they are much more difficult to reach with conventional contact-based chemical treatments.
