Description

Odontothrips is a genus of tiny insects belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These specialized phytophagous pests are significant agricultural threats, particularly known for their damaging impact on legume crops, where they primarily inhabit the flowers and developing pods.

The primary host plants for Odontothrips include various leguminous species such as peas, alfalfa, vetch, lentils, and clover. By congregating within the floral structures, these insects become protected from many environmental factors and insecticides, making them particularly difficult to control during the peak flowering stages of the crops.

The life cycle of the pest consists of egg, larva, propupa, pupa, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs primarily in the adult stage, deep within the soil at depths of 15–20 cm or within crop debris. As spring temperatures rise, the adults emerge from their diapause, migrate to young plants, and eventually move into flowers to lay eggs and complete their life cycle.

Damage caused by Odontothrips is characterized by the deformation of flowers, shedding of buds, and the formation of shriveled, stunted seeds within the pods. Both adults and larvae pierce plant tissues to feed on cell sap, causing necrotic spots, stunted growth, and a significant overall reduction in both grain yield and quality.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

  • Deep plowing in autumn to destroy overwintering sites in the soil.
  • Implementing crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
  • Using early-maturing varieties to minimize exposure time to peak pest populations.
  • Monitoring field populations and applying systemic insecticides when thresholds are exceeded before the flowering period.
