Bean thrips

Systematic position. Odontothrips confusus is a species of insect belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that primarily targets leguminous plants, causing direct damage to their reproductive structures.

Host plants. The primary targets for this species include field peas, alfalfa, clovers, vetch, and lentils. Because these plants are critical forage and pulse crops, the presence of Odontothrips confusus can lead to severe agricultural losses if not properly managed.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises eggs, larvae, pre-pupae, pupae, and adults. Overwintering typically occurs as adults or pupae in the soil or under crop debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge and migrate to the flowers and budding terminals of their host plants to feed and lay eggs.

Damage and harm. Thrips feed by piercing the plant cells and sucking out the contents. This feeding pattern causes blossom blight, flower abortion, and malformation of developing pods. The aesthetic and physiological damage significantly reduces seed yield and quality, making the crop less viable for market or fodder.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

• Crop rotation to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
• Deep plowing in autumn to disturb overwintering sites.
• Timely monitoring of fields using sticky traps during the budding phase.
• Application of selective insecticides when infestation levels exceed economic thresholds.
