Description
The swallow bug (Oeciacus hirundinis) is an ectoparasitic insect belonging to the Cimicidae family. It is morphologically similar to the common bed bug but is highly specialized to feed on the blood of colonial birds, particularly house martins and barn swallows, nesting on human structures.
Biologically, these insects are nest-dwellers. They spend most of their life cycle within the bird's nest, hiding in crevices or structural gaps near the nesting site. They are perfectly adapted to the bird's nesting cycle, with their peak activity occurring during the spring and summer months when nests are occupied by adult birds and chicks.
The lifecycle consists of several nymphal stages, each requiring a blood meal to progress. When birds migrate in autumn, the bugs enter a state of dormancy, overwintering in cracks in the masonry or woodwork of the buildings. If the host returns to the same nest the following year, the colony remains established and continues to thrive.
Regarding harm, the swallow bug is primarily a sanitary nuisance rather than an agricultural pest. While it does not damage crops directly, its potential to invade human residences when host nests are disturbed or vacant causes distress to inhabitants. Bites from these bugs result in localized reactions, inflammation, and intense itching.
Control strategies should focus on habitat management to prevent the establishment of bug populations. The most effective approach is the removal of old, abandoned bird nests from buildings during the winter season, followed by the sealing of structural gaps. In severe infestations, professional pest control treatments using residual insecticides are recommended to eliminate hidden populations in masonry.
