Description

Systematic position: The genus Oiketicus belongs to the family Psychidae, commonly known as bagworm moths, within the order Lepidoptera. The most distinguishing feature of this group is the larval stage, during which individuals construct a portable protective case made from silk and debris collected from their host plants, which they carry throughout their entire larval development.

Host plants: Bagworms are polyphagous pests, capable of feeding on a wide range of woody and shrubby plants. They are known to infest various coniferous trees, such as junipers and cypress, as well as many broad-leaved species, including fruit trees like apples, pears, and citrus, making them a significant concern for both fruit orchards and ornamental nurseries.

Biology and life cycle: The species exhibits extreme sexual dimorphism. Adult males are winged moths capable of flight to locate mates. Females, conversely, are wingless and worm-like, remaining inside their protective bag for their entire adult life. Eggs are laid inside the female's case, and upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin spinning their own small cases, enlarging them as they grow and consume plant tissue.

Damage and economic impact: The primary damage is caused by the larvae feeding on foliage. They consume leaf tissues, often starting with the epidermis and eventually skeletonizing the leaves or stripping them entirely. This feeding behavior stresses the plant, leading to stunted growth, loss of vigor, and, in severe cases, the death of individual branches or young trees, especially in landscape plantings.

Control measures: Management of Oiketicus requires a multi-faceted approach. In smaller settings, manually picking and destroying the bags during the dormant season is highly effective. In larger infestations, chemical control using contact insecticides, such as carbamates or synthetic pyrethroids, is recommended during the early larval stage when the caterpillars are active. Biological controls using Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are also a viable option to reduce environmental impact.
