Geyer's bagworm moth

Geyer's bagworm moth (Oiketicus geyeri) is a species of the bagworm moth family (Psychidae), which belongs to the order Lepidoptera. The pest is named for the distinctive protective cases, or "bags," that the larvae construct from plant debris, twigs, and silk, providing them with effective camouflage and physical defense against predators and environmental stress.

This pest feeds on a wide range of woody plants, shrubs, and ornamental trees. While they are often considered minor pests, localized outbreaks can result in significant defoliation, which causes severe stress to host plants, reduces their vitality, and can make them more susceptible to secondary diseases or drought conditions.

The biology of Oiketicus geyeri exhibits significant sexual dimorphism. Adult males are winged moths capable of flight, while females are wingless, sedentary, and remain inside the protective case throughout their adult lives. Following mating, the female deposits eggs within the case; once the larvae hatch, they begin to construct their own cases and feed.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by the consumption of leaf tissue, ranging from partial skeletonization to complete stripping of the foliage. The larvae's ability to remain within their cases while feeding often allows them to go unnoticed until extensive damage has already occurred on the host plant's branches.

• Application of biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis for early-stage control.
• Utilization of contact or systemic chemical insecticides in cases of severe infestation.

Effective management of this pest focuses on early detection. Since the larval case acts as a powerful barrier against many chemical pesticides, applications should be precisely timed to coincide with the period when young larvae first emerge and begin feeding before their protective cases are fully developed and thickened.
