Oinophila is a genus of moths belonging to the family Tineidae. These small insects are known to be pests in agricultural settings, particularly in environments where fungi and organic waste accumulate. Their presence is frequently associated with poor sanitation or specific climate conditions in indoor crop production.

The primary economic damage caused by Oinophila is linked to mushroom cultivation, where they attack both the mycelium and the fruit bodies of mushrooms such as Agaricus bisporus. Beyond cultivated mushrooms, these insects can survive and reproduce on various decaying vegetable matter, making them versatile and resilient pests in greenhouses and storage facilities.

The biology of Oinophila involves a complete metamorphosis. The female moth deposits eggs on the substrate, where larvae hatch and begin feeding immediately. During their development, larvae spin silk tunnels or webs. This behavior protects them from environmental factors and makes chemical control challenging once the infestation is well-established.

In terms of damage, Oinophila larvae tunnel through the caps and stalks of mushrooms, causing significant tissue destruction. This directly reduces the marketable yield and quality of the crop. Additionally, their feeding activity can create entry points for pathogens and mites, leading to secondary infections that further compromise the health of the mushroom bed.
