Description
Systematic position: Beetles of the genus Olibrus belong to the family Phalacridae (shining flower beetles), within the order Coleoptera. These small, convex beetles are commonly found in meadows and agricultural fields, where they are closely associated with floral structures.
Host crops and impact: These insects primarily target plants from the Asteraceae family. They are known to cause damage to sunflower plantations, various types of daisies, and other oilseed crops. By consuming floral tissues and pollen, they can significantly reduce the potential yield of these plants.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle follows a pattern of complete metamorphosis. Adults typically overwinter in soil, under leaf litter, or within debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to feed and mate, after which females deposit eggs into the developing flower buds of host plants.
