Oak spider mite

The oak spider mite (Oligonychus bicolor) is a species of spider mite belonging to the family Tetranychidae. It is a significant agricultural and forestry pest known for feeding on the foliage of various woody plants, particularly those in the genus Quercus, as well as beech and chestnut trees.

This mite typically colonizes the upper surface of the leaves, where it uses its mouthparts to pierce plant cells and extract sap. It thrives in hot, dry environments, which often occur in late summer. Such conditions favor rapid population growth, frequently leading to noticeable damage on host plants.

The life cycle of the oak spider mite consists of the egg, larva, two nymphal stages (protonymph and deutonymph), and the adult stage. The species overwinters as fertilized adult females that seek shelter in crevices of bark or near the base of buds. During the growing season, multiple overlapping generations can occur, leading to persistent infestations.

The primary symptom of infestation is the bronzing or browning of the upper leaf surface, which occurs as a result of the destruction of chlorophyll cells. As the infestation progresses, leaves may turn gray or brown, curl, and drop prematurely. Extensive damage can severely stress the tree, reducing its vigor and increasing susceptibility to other pathogens.

Effective management strategies focus on both cultural practices and chemical control. Maintaining plant health through proper irrigation is essential for increasing tolerance to mite pressure. When chemical intervention is necessary, the application of specific acaricides targeted at the foliage is recommended. Regular monitoring for early signs of discoloration is critical for successful control before the population reaches damaging levels.
