Description
The Hondo spruce spider mite (Oligonychus hondoensis) is a member of the spider mite family (Tetranychidae). As an agricultural and forestry pest, it primarily targets conifers, sucking sap from needles and significantly impacting the vitality and aesthetic quality of the host plant.
The primary host species include various spruce varieties (Picea). These mites prefer needles in the mid-to-lower canopy, although in cases of severe infestation, they spread across the entire tree. They are particularly active during warm, dry weather conditions which accelerate their reproductive cycle.
The biological cycle follows a typical pattern for spider mites, consisting of egg, larval, nymphal, and adult stages. The winter is usually spent in the egg stage, attached to the bark or the base of needles. Once the temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch, and the population begins to multiply rapidly through multiple generations per year.
Visual symptoms of infestation include a dulling of needle color, followed by yellowing and browning (bronzing). The presence of fine webbing covering the needles is a distinct diagnostic sign. Heavy feeding pressure leads to premature needle drop, which causes significant stress to the tree and can lead to growth stagnation.
