Description
The sugarcane spider mite (Oligonychus indicus) is a destructive member of the Tetranychidae family. It is recognized globally as a significant pest, particularly in tropical and subtropical agriculture where it causes substantial economic losses in cereal production.
The host range of Oligonychus indicus is relatively broad among the Poaceae family. Key crops severely impacted by this mite include sorghum, maize, and sugarcane. Wild grasses serve as essential alternative hosts, allowing the pest to survive and migrate to crop fields during favorable seasons.
The life cycle is typical for spider mites, consisting of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The speed of development is highly temperature-dependent, with rapid population explosions occurring during hot, dry weather conditions. Mites aggregate on the underside of leaves, where they establish colonies and reproduce efficiently.
Damage symptoms begin with chlorotic spots on leaves, which progressively become necrotic. The mites spin dense webs that cover the leaf surface, causing physiological stress and reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. Severe infestations lead to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and significantly reduced grain yield.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as maintaining field hygiene and managing irrigation to avoid drought stress are crucial. Chemical control using specific acaricides is necessary when thresholds are exceeded, but it should be carefully timed to protect natural predators like phytoseiid mites, which can provide significant biological control.
