The Mexican spider mite (Oligonychus mexicanus) belongs to the Tetranychidae family within the order Trombidiformes. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that thrives in warm regions, posing a serious threat to various cereal crops and grasses.
This pest primarily attacks host plants such as maize and sorghum. By congregating on the undersides of leaves, the mites utilize their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract vital cell fluids, which directly disrupts the plant's metabolic functions and reduces overall yield quality.
The biological development of Oligonychus mexicanus is highly temperature-dependent, with rapid life cycles occurring during hot, dry weather conditions. The development stages consist of eggs, larvae, protonymphs, deutonymphs, and adults. Given these conditions, the population can expand exponentially within a very short timeframe during the growing season.
