Description

Oligonychus modestus is a species of spider mite belonging to the family Tetranychidae and the order Trombidiformes. While often overshadowed by more common species in its genus, it acts as a significant pest specialized in colonizing and feeding on various coniferous trees.

This pest predominantly damages species within the Picea (spruce) and Abies (fir) genera. It typically colonizes the needles, where it extracts cell contents, leading to cellular dehydration and disruption of the photosynthetic activity, which can be devastating for young seedlings and mature ornamental trees alike.

The biology of Oligonychus modestus is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and humidity. The life cycle comprises egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under hot and arid conditions, the mite reproduces rapidly, allowing for multiple overlapping generations throughout the growing season, which quickly leads to heavy infestation.

Damage symptoms usually start as chlorotic spotting, commonly referred to as stippling, on the needles. As the population increases, the damage spreads throughout the canopy.
