Bamboo spider mite

Taxonomy: Oligonychus orthius belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae (spider mites). This species is specifically adapted to feed on members of the Poaceae family, with a strong preference for various bamboo species, often becoming a significant pest in nurseries and botanical collections.

Host plants and damage: The primary host is bamboo. The mites feed by piercing the plant cells and sucking out the sap, which leads to the formation of characteristic chlorotic stippling on the leaves. As the infestation progresses, these spots coalesce, causing the foliage to turn yellow, dry out, and eventually drop prematurely, severely impacting the plant's aesthetic value and metabolic health.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle consists of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Oligonychus orthius thrives in hot and dry conditions. The mites are prolific, and the population can explode rapidly if environmental conditions are favorable. They often weave fine silk webbing over the leaf surface, which provides shelter for the eggs and colonies from predators and environmental stress.

Economic impact: Beyond the aesthetic degradation of bamboo, high-density mite populations significantly reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plants. This stress makes the plants more susceptible to secondary diseases and environmental stressors like drought. In commercial bamboo production, this pest can lead to stunted growth and reduced vigor of nursery stock.

Control measures: Managing Oligonychus orthius requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach:

• Regular monitoring of the undersides of leaves to detect early infestations.
• Overhead irrigation or misting to increase humidity, which is detrimental to spider mite populations.
• Targeted application of specific acaricides during the early stages of infestation.
• Biological control using predatory mites such as Phytoseiulus persimilis or Amblyseius spp.
