Description

The Persea mite (Oligonychus perseae) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Tetranychidae family within the Trombidiformes order. It was first described in Mexico and has since become a major challenge for commercial avocado growers across various tropical and subtropical regions.

The primary host for this mite is the avocado tree (Persea americana). The pest colonizes the underside of leaves, feeding on plant cells and extracting sap. If left unmanaged, heavy infestations can lead to substantial canopy loss, reducing the tree's overall photosynthetic capacity.

The biological cycle of Oligonychus perseae consists of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The speed of its life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature, with warmer conditions significantly shortening development time, allowing for multiple generations to occur in a single growing season.

Feeding damage is characterized by the formation of circular necrotic colonies along the leaf veins, often covered by fine silk webbing. These brown spots eventually coalesce, causing the leaf to turn yellow or necrotic. The resulting premature leaf drop can expose the fruit to excessive sunlight, leading to fruit sunburn and quality degradation.

Management of the Persea mite typically requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Control strategies include:

  • Biological control using predatory mites such as Neoseiulus californicus.
  • Judicious use of selective acaricides when population thresholds are exceeded.
  • Cultural practices that reduce tree stress and promote healthy canopy development.
  • Regular field scouting to detect initial infestation hotspots.
