Description

The Banks grass mite (Oligonychus pratensis) is a member of the Tetranychidae family within the order Trombidiformes. This agricultural pest is well-known for its ability to devastate grass crops, including corn and wheat, particularly in dry and arid environmental conditions.

This mite infests a wide range of host plants, including maize, sorghum, barley, and wheat. It typically begins its infestation on the lower leaves of the plant, gradually moving upwards as the population increases and environmental conditions remain favorable for their rapid reproduction.

The biological cycle of the Banks grass mite consists of an egg, larva, two nymphal stages (protonymph and deutonymph), and the adult stage. The species thrives in hot, dry weather, which accelerates its development rate and allows for multiple generations to occur during a single growing season.

Damage caused by the mite is characterized by leaf stippling and yellowing, which eventually turns into brown necrotic patches. As the infestation progresses, the mites spin fine silk webs across the leaf surface. This activity reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to stunted growth and significant losses in yield and grain quality.
