Description
Systematic position. The guava spider mite (Oligonychus psidii) is classified within the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae. This tiny arachnid is a significant pest that specializes in feeding on specific host plants, primarily within the Myrtaceae family, thriving in tropical and subtropical orchard environments.
Host plants. The primary host for this species is the common guava (Psidium guajava). In monoculture plantations, the mite can cause severe economic losses by attacking both mature trees and nursery seedlings. Its host range may occasionally extend to other botanical relatives, allowing the population to persist even when primary host densities are managed.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Oligonychus psidii consists of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Its development is highly temperature-dependent, with warmer climates significantly shortening the generation time. Dry conditions are particularly conducive to explosive population growth, often leading to rapid colonization of entire orchards.
Type of damage and harmfulness. Mites feed by piercing the epidermal cells of leaves with their mouthparts and extracting sap. This feeding behavior causes chlorotic spotting, which later turns necrotic as the damage progresses. Heavy infestations result in severe leaf drop, stunted shoot development, and poor fruit quality. In extreme cases, the infestation is characterized by visible fine webbing covering the leaf surfaces.
Protection measures. Managing the guava spider mite requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:
- Regular field scouting to detect mite colonies at the earliest possible stage.
- Application of targeted acaricides, ensuring rotation of chemical classes to prevent the development of resistance.
- Maintaining optimal orchard hydration, as drought-stressed trees are significantly more susceptible to mite damage.
- Encouraging biological control agents, such as predatory phytoseiid mites, to suppress pest populations naturally.
