Description
The green mite (Oligonychus viridis) is a destructive plant-feeding pest belonging to the family Tetranychidae within the order Trombidiformes. Recognized as a significant agricultural threat, this species primarily targets monocotyledonous crops, causing extensive physiological damage to foliage.
This mite species is known to infest a variety of grasses and cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and wild pasture species. It thrives in hot and dry climates, making it a particular nuisance in regions with semi-arid conditions where the mite population can explode rapidly during dry spells.
The biological cycle of Oligonychus viridis consists of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Given the favorable environmental temperature, the mite can complete multiple generations in a single season. Overwintering occurs primarily in the adult female stage, hiding in crop residues or sheltered soil areas until spring emergence.
Damage is characterized by chlorotic spotting and subsequent bronzing of the leaves, resulting from the mite's piercing-sucking mouthparts that deplete essential cellular contents. This feeding activity disrupts the plant's ability to photosynthesize, leading to premature leaf senescence, reduced biomass production, and significantly diminished crop yields.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling Oligonychus viridis. This includes implementing rigorous weed control to eliminate alternative hosts, promoting natural enemy populations, and utilizing acaricides when pest thresholds are breached.
