These insects are distinguished by their ability to produce silk from glands located on their front tarsi. They utilize this silk to construct elaborate tunnels and galleries on tree bark, rocks, and plant stems, providing a safe environment away from predators and harsh environmental conditions.

This pest primarily affects woody plants, ornamental shrubs, and occasionally crops in warm, humid regions. While their diet consists mainly of lichens, mosses, and decaying organic matter, they can damage living plant tissues when food sources are scarce or populations are dense. Damage is often observed as surface etching or bark consumption, which can weaken the host plant over time.

The biology of Oligotoma oceanica is closely linked to microclimates with high relative humidity. Their lifecycle consists of eggs, nymphs, and adults.
