Four-spotted flea beetle

Omophoita quadrinotata

Description

The four-spotted flea beetle (Omophoita quadrinotata) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. This beetle is recognized as a significant pest in various agricultural regions, particularly where solanaceous crops are grown, causing economic losses due to intensive feeding behavior.

This pest has a strong preference for members of the Solanaceae family. Its primary host plants include tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers, and eggplants. In addition to commercial crops, the beetle thrives on wild nightshades, which serve as alternative food sources and refugia during periods when primary crops are not available.

The lifecycle of Omophoita quadrinotata consists of four main stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically oviposit in the soil or on the underside of foliage. Larvae undergo several instars while consuming leaf tissue before descending to the soil to pupate. The speed of the cycle is largely dependent on ambient temperature and moisture levels.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by the formation of small, circular holes in the foliage, often described as a shot-hole pattern. Adults feed by scraping the leaf surface or eating through the lamina. Heavy infestations lead to extensive defoliation, stunted plant development, and a reduction in both fruit quality and total yield.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control this pest. Key strategies include:

  • Monitoring fields regularly during the early growth stages of the crop.
  • Removing alternative host weeds around field edges to reduce population pressure.
  • Applying targeted insecticides when economic injury thresholds are reached.
  • Implementing cultural practices, such as mechanical soil cultivation, to disrupt the pupal development stage in the ground.
