Systematic position. Omorgus tumidulus is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Trogidae. These beetles are characterized by their rugged, bumpy exoskeletons, which allow them to thrive in various soil conditions and serve as a camouflage against the debris they inhabit.

Crops affected. While they primarily function as decomposers, they can become pests in agricultural settings. They have been known to cause damage to germinating cereal and forage crops, particularly in fields where soil moisture and organic matter provide favorable environments for their reproduction.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The beetles are typically soil-dwelling, with adults emerging to feed and reproduce. Larvae are active in the soil layer, consuming organic material, yet they may switch to feeding on plant roots and germinating seeds if natural food sources are scarce.

Damage and pest impact. The primary concern is the feeding damage to seeds and seedlings underground. This feeding behavior causes poor crop establishment, resulting in patchy fields and reduced plant density. The economic impact is most significant during the early spring when cool weather slows seedling growth, leaving them vulnerable for longer periods.
