Oncopera

Oncopera is a genus of moths belonging to the family Hepialidae, commonly known as ghost moths. These insects are infamous in agricultural science, particularly in Australia and New Zealand, for the significant economic damage caused by their larvae. They are specialized feeders that inhabit soil and consume various vegetative components of grasses and forage crops.

The primary hosts of this pest include a variety of perennial ryegrasses, fescue, clover, and occasionally emerging cereal crops. Larvae act as root and crown feeders, though they are most notorious for cutting down stems and consuming leaves at the soil surface, leading to rapid degradation of high-quality agricultural pastures.

The life cycle of Oncopera is typically univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Adult moths emerge in late summer or autumn. After mating, females disperse eggs over pasture areas during flight. Once the larvae emerge, they construct vertical tunnels in the soil. These subterranean homes provide protection during daylight, while the larvae emerge at night to feed under the cover of silk-lined galleries.

Damage symptoms usually appear as bare patches in fields, as the larvae clear the vegetation down to the soil level. In severe infestations, the loss of plant cover can lead to total pasture destruction, which not only affects livestock productivity but also exposes the soil to wind and water erosion, making long-term field recovery more difficult.
