Description
Oncopodura crassicornis is a species of micro-arthropod belonging to the order Collembola (springtails) and the family Oncopoduridae. These tiny organisms are common inhabitants of moist soils, forest litter, and organic-rich substrates, where they generally play a role in decomposition, but can become significant pests in agricultural settings.
The pest primarily affects a wide range of plants, particularly in greenhouse environments and nurseries. It causes damage to emerging seedlings, germinating seeds, and the delicate root systems of young plants. By feeding on living root tissues and stems, the insects create entry points for soil-borne pathogens, leading to stunted growth or total loss of seedlings.
The biological cycle consists of eggs, several nymphal stages, and adults. They thrive in environments with high moisture and temperature levels around 15–22°C. Due to their rapid reproductive capacity, populations can reach high densities very quickly, especially in soils with high peat or organic matter content which provides ample food sources throughout the year.
Damage caused by Oncopodura crassicornis often appears as irregular pits or small necrotic lesions on roots and subterranean stems. Due to the extremely small size of the pest, farmers often overlook their presence, incorrectly attributing the poor plant health to moisture stress or primary root rot diseases. This misidentification can lead to incorrect management strategies.
Effective control strategies focus on environmental manipulation and chemical intervention. Proper drainage and regulated irrigation are critical to reduce population growth. Pre-planting soil sterilization or heat treatment is highly recommended for greenhouse substrates. If infestations are severe, application of specialized soil insecticides or systemic treatments may be required to protect the root zone.
