Ootheca bennigseni is a significant beetle species belonging to the family Chrysomelidae and the order Coleoptera. It is widely recognized as a major economic pest affecting legume crops, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The beetle's ability to proliferate under specific climatic conditions makes it a persistent challenge for agricultural productivity.

The primary host plants of this pest include common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), cowpea, soybeans, and groundnuts. In regions where these crops are staple foods, Ootheca bennigseni outbreaks can lead to substantial food security issues due to severe yield losses in both subsistence and commercial farming systems.

The biological cycle of the beetle is strongly tied to the onset of the rainy season. Adult beetles emerge from the soil simultaneously, feeding voraciously on foliage and mating. The eggs are deposited in the soil, where the larval stage develops by feeding on the root system of the host plants, completing the cycle as they pupate within the soil profile.
