Opatroides is a genus of insects belonging to the Tenebrionidae family (darkling beetles) within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are predominantly soil-dwelling organisms found in various agricultural landscapes, particularly in regions with arid or semi-arid climates. They have evolved to thrive in environments with low moisture and high soil exposure.
The pest poses a significant threat to a wide range of crops, including cereals, vegetables, and ornamental plants. It is particularly damaging to seeds and seedlings during the early stages of development. The beetles and their larvae feed on the underground parts of plants, often causing irreversible structural damage that stunts growth or leads to plant death.
The biological cycle of Opatroides involves distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles are primarily nocturnal, spending daylight hours hidden beneath soil debris, mulch, or within soil crevices.
