Pearl darkling beetle

The pearl darkling beetle (lat. Opatrum perlatum) is a member of the Tenebrionidae family, within the order Coleoptera. This beetle is a common pest in arid and semi-arid agricultural regions, known for its ability to cause significant damage to early-stage crops by feeding on emerging shoots and underground plant parts.

This pest affects a wide range of crops, with a particular affinity for cereals such as wheat and barley, as well as row crops like maize and sunflowers. In regions with high population densities, the pearl darkling beetle can cause substantial stand thinning, often leading to total crop failure in heavily infested patches of the field.

The biology of Opatrum perlatum is closely tied to soil moisture and temperature regimes. The beetles overwinter in the upper soil layers or beneath crop debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed actively. The life cycle consists of complete metamorphosis, with the larval stage developing in the soil, where they consume organic matter and may occasionally damage root systems.

The damage caused by the pearl darkling beetle is primarily characterized by the consumption of epidermal tissue on stems and leaves, often severing or stunting the development of young seedlings. When a crop is attacked during its cotyledon stage, the destruction of the growth point leads to rapid wilting and the death of the plant, significantly impacting field uniformity.
