Description
Systematic position and description. Ophionea nigrofasciata is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Carabidae. Although many carabids are predatory, this specific species is known for causing damage to agricultural crops. It is characterized by its slender body shape and a distinct black stripe running along the elytra, which makes it identifiable in the field.
Host plants and distribution. The primary host for this pest is rice. It is widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia, where rice cultivation is dominant. The insect also exploits wild grasses and weeds surrounding the fields, which allows it to maintain its population density throughout the agricultural season.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Ophionea nigrofasciata is closely adapted to the flooded environments of rice paddies. Eggs are laid on plant tissue, and the subsequent larval stages feed voraciously on the succulent parts of the plants.
