Systematic position and description. Ophionea nigrofasciata is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Carabidae. Although many carabids are predatory, this specific species is known for causing damage to agricultural crops. It is characterized by its slender body shape and a distinct black stripe running along the elytra, which makes it identifiable in the field.

Host plants and distribution. The primary host for this pest is rice. It is widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia, where rice cultivation is dominant. The insect also exploits wild grasses and weeds surrounding the fields, which allows it to maintain its population density throughout the agricultural season.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Ophionea nigrofasciata is closely adapted to the flooded environments of rice paddies. Eggs are laid on plant tissue, and the subsequent larval stages feed voraciously on the succulent parts of the plants. Due to the favorable tropical climate in its native range, the beetle can complete several generations per year, leading to rapid population surges.

Nature of damage. The larvae and adults cause mechanical damage to rice leaves by consuming the epidermis and the underlying parenchyma. This feeding activity results in chlorotic and necrotic patches on the leaves. Severe infestations lead to a reduction in leaf area, which subsequently impairs photosynthesis and significantly reduces grain yield.

Protection measures. Managing Ophionea nigrofasciata requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

• Implementing proper crop rotation and removing alternative weed hosts.
• Monitoring pest populations using systematic field scouting and trapping.
• Application of selective insecticides when infestation thresholds are exceeded.
