Systematic position: The domestic checkered beetle (Opilo domesticus) is a coleopteran insect belonging to the family Cleridae. While many members of this family are recognized as predators of other wood-boring insects, this species is frequently encountered within structural timber, acting as both a predator and a secondary pest that contributes to the degradation of wooden items.

Host materials and infestation: This pest primarily targets dry wood, including softwood and hardwood used in building construction and antique furniture. It is often found in attics, rafters, and poorly maintained storage areas where the wood has already been subjected to infestations by common furniture beetles or other wood-boring larvae.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Opilo domesticus undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adults lay eggs into the crevices and pre-existing galleries of the wood. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the material, feeding and growing over a prolonged period. The speed of the cycle is heavily dictated by ambient humidity and the internal temperature of the infested building.

Nature of damage and pest status: The economic impact of the domestic checkered beetle stems from the structural damage it causes to timber. Larval activity results in a network of galleries that weaken wooden beams and furniture frames. The presence of the beetle is typically indicated by round emergence holes on the surface of the wood as the adults exit.
