Brimstone moth

Systematic position: The Brimstone moth (Opisthograptis luteolata) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. It is a common insect found in orchards and temperate forests, characterized by its distinctive yellow coloration and specific feeding patterns on various tree species.

Host plants: The pest primarily targets members of the Rosaceae family. Its preferred hosts include hawthorn, apple, pear, plum, and rowan trees. While it is often associated with wild hedgerows, it can cause significant aesthetic and physiological damage when found in commercial or backyard orchards.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adults, known for their bright yellow wings with rusty-brown markings, are typically crepuscular. The species overwinters as young larvae within silken webs spun between branches. In early spring, the larvae emerge to feed on developing buds and foliage, completing their life cycle by pupating in cocoons attached to leaves or twigs.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The larvae act as foliage feeders. Initially, they skeletonize the leaves, but as they grow, they consume larger portions, resulting in tattered foliage or complete defoliation of small shoots. Persistent heavy infestations stress the tree, reducing its vigor, photosynthetic capacity, and overall yield potential for the growing season.

Control measures: Management strategies focus on early detection and integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Mechanical removal of overwintering webs in late winter is highly effective for small-scale infestations. For larger orchards, applying authorized insecticides or biological agents such as Bacillus thuringiensis during the early larval stage provides effective suppression and limits further foliage destruction.
