Originally native to tropical regions of Asia, this species has become a major concern for both plantation agriculture and ornamental gardening due to its aggressive feeding behavior.

This insect is a polyphagous pest, meaning it attacks a wide array of host plants. Economically important crops such as cocoa, tea, coffee, citrus, castor, and various legumes are frequently infested. The larvae are known to be highly voracious, capable of consuming significant amounts of foliage in a short period, which poses a direct threat to yield quality and quantity.

The biology of Orgyia postica involves a distinct life cycle consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. A notable trait of this species is the sexual dimorphism: females are typically flightless, which limits their dispersal capabilities but leads to concentrated damage in specific areas. The larvae are easily recognizable by their tufted hairs, which serve as a defense mechanism.
