Description
Systematic position: The Douglas-fir tussock moth (Orgyia pseudotsugata) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. It is a highly destructive defoliator native to western North America, notorious for its periodic outbreaks that can cause widespread tree mortality.
Host plants: The primary hosts include Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), true firs (Abies spp.), and spruces (Picea spp.). While it prefers specific host species, the larvae can feed on various conifers within their range, especially during massive population explosions.
Biology and life cycle: The insect completes one generation per year. The eggs are overwintered in masses covered with silk and hairs on twigs and branches. Larvae emerge in late spring and typically feed on the current year's needles first. Adult females are wingless, meaning they rely on localized infestations, while young larvae can disperse by wind over short distances.
