Cherry leaf miner

The Cherry leaf miner (Ornix prunivorella) is a member of the Gracillariidae family, order Lepidoptera. This small moth is a significant pest of fruit trees, characterized by its larval stage which feeds inside the leaf tissue. Its unique biological habit makes it a persistent challenge for commercial and home fruit growers.

The primary host plants include stone fruit trees such as cherry, sweet cherry, plum, and apricot. In addition, the species may occasionally infest apple trees. Severe infestations lead to extensive damage to the foliage, which compromises the tree’s photosynthetic capacity and weakens its overall health, leading to reduced fruit quality.

The life cycle involves two generations per year. The insect overwinters as a pupa within a silk cocoon hidden in leaf rolls or bark crevices. In spring, the adult moths emerge, mate, and lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. The larvae hatch and immediately bore into the leaf, creating distinct, irregular blotch mines.

As the larva matures, it consumes the internal leaf tissue and eventually rolls the leaf margin into a cone or tube structure using silk threads. This feeding habit creates a visible distortion of the leaves. High populations cause premature leaf drop, which puts the tree under stress, potentially impacting the following year's bud development.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Chemical control is most successful when timed correctly with the hatching of the larvae, as they are most vulnerable before forming the protective leaf rolls. The recommended management program includes:

• Sanitation by removing fallen leaves to eliminate overwintering pupae.
• Monitoring adult moth activity using pheromone traps.
• Targeted application of contact or systemic insecticides during the peak of egg-hatching.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and pruning to help the plant recover from stress.
