Description

Orthocis schizophylli is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Ciidae. These beetles are specialized mycetophages, often found in association with various species of wood-decaying basidiomycetes, particularly the common split gill fungus (Schizophyllum commune).

The primary hosts for this pest are wood-inhabiting fungi. While primarily existing in forest ecosystems, these beetles can become problematic in indoor mushroom farming or laboratories where wood-based substrates are used to cultivate gourmet or medicinal mushrooms, leading to significant economic losses.

The biological cycle of this beetle occurs entirely within the fungal tissue. Adult beetles deposit eggs inside the pileus of the fungus. Larvae emerge and bore deep into the fungal structure, consuming the hyphae and tissue. This feeding process results in the rapid destruction of the host fruiting body.

Damage is typically characterized by numerous small boreholes on the surface of the mushroom and a powdery texture caused by beetle frass (excrement). This damage renders the mushrooms unmarketable and can lead to the collapse of the mycelial structure, reducing the overall yield of the cultivated crop.

Effective management requires strict sanitation protocols in mushroom production facilities. Prevention is the key strategy, involving the sterilization of growth substrates and the implementation of fine mesh screening on ventilation intakes to prevent adult beetles from entering. In case of infestation, chemical treatments must be carefully selected to avoid toxicity to the mushroom crop.
