Description
Orthopelma luteolator is a specialized parasitoid wasp belonging to the family Ichneumonidae. Unlike common agricultural pests that feed directly on plant tissues, this insect targets the larvae of the rose gall wasp (Diplolepis rosae) residing within the complex, hairy galls often found on wild and cultivated roses.
The primary hosts for this insect are various species of the genus Rosa. The presence of the pest is linked to the development of galls, known as "robin's pincushion" or bedeguar galls. These structures divert the plant's resources, causing localized physiological stress and morphological changes in the affected stems.
The biological cycle of Orthopelma luteolator is tightly synchronized with its host. The larvae spend the winter inside the woody, multi-chambered galls, which provide significant physical protection. Upon reaching maturity, the adults emerge in early spring, coinciding with the fresh gall formation period to begin the next generation.
