The rice rat, belonging to the genus Oryzomys and the family Cricetidae, is a significant pest in agricultural sectors, particularly in rice-producing regions. These rodents are semi-aquatic in nature and thrive in the humid, irrigated environment of rice paddies, where they find both food and nesting materials. Their ability to navigate water bodies gives them a unique ecological advantage in agricultural landscapes.

The primary crop impacted by Oryzomys is rice, although they are known to cause damage to other crops cultivated in adjacent wetlands or moist soils. They feed on various plant parts, starting from tender seedlings to mature grains.
