Marsh rice rat

The marsh rice rat (Oryzomys palustris) is a member of the order Rodentia and the family Cricetidae. This semi-aquatic rodent is well-adapted to wetland environments, which are often identical to those used for rice cultivation. Due to its physiology and behavioral patterns, it occupies a specific niche within agricultural landscapes, thriving in irrigated fields and along canal embankments.

As an agricultural pest, the marsh rice rat primarily targets rice crops and other wetland cereals. These rodents cause damage by feeding on vegetative parts of the plant, as well as developing grain. Because they are excellent swimmers, they can move easily throughout flooded fields, making large areas susceptible to infestation and grazing by these small mammals.

The biological development of this species is marked by high reproductive potential. Under favorable conditions, the marsh rice rat can produce multiple litters per year, allowing population numbers to spike rapidly during the growing season. Their ability to construct nests in wet environments allows them to persist even in conditions that would typically deter other common rodent species.

The impact is exacerbated by their burrowing behavior in irrigation infrastructure. By digging tunnels into dikes and levees, they can cause water leakage and loss, which disrupts the precise irrigation management required for healthy rice development.

Control measures for the marsh rice rat must be integrated and strictly managed to protect crops. Key strategies include:
