Taxonomic position. Oulema bomaensis belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This insect is classified as a specialized pest of cereal crops, playing a significant role in agricultural ecology by impacting the health and development of key staple grain species in infested territories.

Crops affected. This pest primarily targets various species of cereals, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. The beetles and their larvae are highly adaptable to the growth stages of these crops, causing damage during the tillering and shooting phases of plants, which are critical for yield formation.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Oulema bomaensis includes the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adults hibernate in protected areas such as soil or debris. Upon emerging in spring, they feed and lay eggs on the upper surface of cereal leaves. The larvae, which are often covered in their own mucus for protection, feed voraciously on the leaf tissues before descending into the soil to pupate.

Damage and economic significance. The damage is characterized by longitudinal, light-colored stripes on the leaves where the larvae have consumed the parenchyma, leaving the lower epidermis intact. Severe infestations lead to extensive skeletonization of the leaf surface, which severely hampers photosynthesis. This stress causes premature plant senescence and a marked reduction in both grain quality and total harvest yield.
