Description
Systematic position. The Inula aphid (Ovatus inulae) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest species that thrives on plants within the Asteraceae family, most notably those belonging to the genus Inula, commonly known as elecampane.
Host plants and damage. This aphid primarily affects ornamental and medicinal species of Inula. By piercing plant tissues and feeding on phloem sap, the aphids extract essential nutrients. This feeding behavior causes significant stress to the host, resulting in stunted development and leaf curling, which drastically reduces the commercial value of the crop.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Ovatus inulae involves rapid reproduction through parthenogenesis, allowing populations to explode during favorable climatic conditions. Several generations occur throughout the growing season, consisting of both apterous (wingless) and alate (winged) individuals, the latter enabling the colonizing of new host plants.
Nature of damage. Beyond direct nutritional loss, the aphids inject toxic saliva into the plant, which leads to localized necrosis and deformation of young tissues. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This black fungal layer covers the foliage, effectively blocking sunlight and inhibiting photosynthesis, further weakening the plant.
Protection measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest.
