European mouflon

The European mouflon (lat. Ovis gmelinii musimon) is a wild sheep species that can act as a significant agricultural pest in areas with high population densities. Systematically classified within the Artiodactyla order and Bovidae family, these animals are highly adaptable. While they are a traditional game species, their foraging behavior often brings them into direct conflict with modern agricultural practices.

European mouflons are herbivores with a broad diet, making them particularly dangerous to cultivated crops. They frequently graze on winter wheat, leguminous crops, and forage grasses. Furthermore, in forestry and fruit production, they pose a severe threat to young saplings, where they feed on terminal buds and strip bark, causing stunted growth or the total death of the plants.

The biological cycle of the mouflon is seasonal, with the rut occurring in autumn and lambing in late winter or spring. Their high reproductive rate and lack of natural predators in many managed habitats lead to overpopulation. These animals are primarily crepuscular, meaning they are most active during dawn and dusk, which allows them to enter farmland undetected and cause damage before being observed.

The damage caused by mouflons is categorized by both consumption and mechanical destruction. By grazing on fields, they destroy crop stands, reduce biomass production, and significantly affect yield quality. Mechanical damage to the bark of fruit trees leads to severe physiological stress in trees and creates entry points for fungal diseases and pests, causing long-term economic losses for orchardists.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Installation of high-tensile wire fencing or specialized game-proof mesh.
• Application of bitter-tasting or olfactory-based repellents on tree trunks.
• Use of electronic deterrents, such as motion-activated sound and light systems.
• Population control through systematic culling, managed strictly under regional wildlife conservation laws.
