Oxycarenus

Oxycarenus is a genus of insects in the family Lygaeidae, belonging to the order Hemiptera. These true bugs, often referred to as cotton seed bugs, are recognized as significant agricultural pests, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. The most prominent species, Oxycarenus hyalinipennis, is a notorious threat to cotton production globally.

The primary hosts for these insects are plants within the Malvaceae family. Cotton is the most significantly affected crop, but the pest also infests okra, hibiscus, and various ornamental plants. It is highly capable of surviving on alternative weed hosts, which allows the population to persist throughout the year even in the absence of primary commercial crops.

The biological development of Oxycarenus involves an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The life cycle is relatively rapid, allowing for multiple overlapping generations per growing season. Females typically lay their eggs in protected areas, such as inside opening cotton bolls or between fibers, ensuring safety for the developing nymphs.

The damage caused by Oxycarenus is both quantitative and qualitative. Nymphs and adults pierce the seed coat of the cotton seeds to extract nutrients, which results in reduced seed weight and poor germination. Furthermore, they contaminate the cotton lint with their excreta, leading to severe staining that drastically reduces the market grade and commercial value of the fiber.

Control strategies require an integrated approach (IPM). Key measures include:

• Maintaining field hygiene by removing crop debris after harvest.
• Managing weed hosts surrounding the fields to limit breeding grounds.
• Monitoring population density during the boll-opening stage.
• Applying selective insecticides only when population thresholds are exceeded to minimize impact on beneficial insects.
